Rotherham United's Dan Barlaser talks about being a wanted man in the recent transfer window

DAN Barlaser never sought a move away from Rotherham United during the summer transfer window.

The midfielder was coveted by Championship rivals Blackpool, who made a series of bids culminating in a £1-million-plus offer, and other teams also showed interest.

But the 25-year-old says he is happy that September 1 deadline day came and went with him remaining at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

“You have to respect what your club want,” Barlaser said. “Rotherham didn’t want to sell and, personally, I didn’t really want to go.

“I’m playing week in, week out here. I don’t really see a point in moving when I’m playing.”

The Geordie — joint top of the second-tier rankings for assists with four after the opening six weeks of the campaign — is out of contract in the summer and talks are due to start soon over a new deal.

He is settled in South Yorkshire with partner Jade and baby son Emre and isn’t ruling out remaining with the Millers.

However, he will be in heavy demand as a free agent if he lets his present deal, signed in 2020, run down.

“I’ve got  year left,” he said. “We’ll just see what happens. I haven’t had an offer from the club yet but it usually comes a bit later than this.

“I haven’t really thought about it, to be honest.”

Other players manager Paul Warne will open negotiations with include attacker Chiedozie Ogbene, midfielder Ben Wiles and goalkeeping duo Viktor Johansson and Josh Vickers.

Barlaser is focused on helping Rotherham establish themselves as a Championship side this term and has already moved on from last month’s bidding by the Seasiders who were at New York for a league clash last night.

“You have to respect the teams that are coming in for you because they’re very good teams, but it hasn’t unsettled me,” he said.
