A MIDFIELDER in Holland is among Rotherham United’s transfer targets as manager Paul Warne gears up for a round of talks with potential new recruits.

The Millers, who want to make up to eight signings ready for life in the Championship after their promotion from League One, have opened dialogue with his Dutch club.

The player is predominantly a wing-back and fits the bill for Warne because he can play anywhere on the left flank.

“He can play left wing, left-back and left wing-back,” the boss said. “I see it as a real weakness of ours down the left side – in terms of numbers, not in ability. Strengthening there is a big job for us.”

Another target is flying in from Europe next week to be shown round Rotherham’s Roundwood training complex while Warne is today (Thursday) holding FaceTime get-togethers with “two or three” other prospective arrivals.

Among that group is a goalkeeper, a central midfielder and a left winger who can also operate as a left-back.

“I’ve got two or three FaceTime meetings on Thursday with players that we’re quite a long way into it with,” Warne said. “It’s about seeing whether we like each other. The players want reassurances about where I see them playing and all that.

“Some of the players we’re talking to now are still in their season. That makes everything a bit cloudier.”

The target who is flying in plays for an English team but his season has finished and he has been spending time back home in a country in mainland Europe.

“He’s not flying in just to see me,” Warne said. “He’s flying in to see his parent club and then arranging to meet me. I’ll show him around the place to see what he thinks.”

The EFL announced this week that the summer transfer window will run from July 27 to October 16 and Warne, who made free-agent winger Mickel Miller his first capture a fortnight ago, said: “I don’t foresee any signings for us before August.”

Warne is keen on the player in Holland and added: “We’ve got a real dearth down the left side, that is for sure.

“We’ve got Mickel, Trev (Clarke) and Joe Mattock. They’re our only players on the left flank really. I know Robbo (Clark Robertson) can back us up at left-back, but we’ve got to try to get as strong a squad as possible.”

Reports linking former Sheffield Wednesday striker Sam Winnall to a move to the Millers are not true.
