Rotherham United go green thanks to engineering company

ROTHERHAM United have linked up with environmentally-conscious engineering firm AESSEAL to save thousands of bottles from going to landfill.

Millers players are now opting for multi-use bottles and filtered and chilled water after partnering with AESSEAL’s Betterworld.Solutions campaign.

The idea was sparked when the mechanical seal manufacturer had a visit from striker Georgie Kelly and it emerged that the club’s training facility used a lot of single-use plastic bottles.

Parkgate-based AESSEAL donated a water chiller and 60 Betterworld-branded multi-use plastic bottles to the club.

Georgie, who recently graduated with a masters degree in Renewable Energy and Environmental Finance, said he had been inspired by the meeting at AESSEAL to look at the scope for improving the club’s “green” efforts.

“I know that the club are conscious of trying to reduce their carbon footprint and are focused on limiting the negative impact we have on the environment,” he said.

“For us to be able to take a massive step towards doing that by reducing the number of single-use plastics is amazing.”

Betterworld founder and AESSEAL managing director Chris Rea said: “Well done to Georgie and the whole team at RUFC for making the choice of chilled and filtered water and reusable bottles.

“This is providing visible support for the Betterworld campaign and is another example of RUFC providing a lead that I hope other businesses and football clubs will follow.”

AESSEAL recently received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the sustainable development category.

The firm also become the first major global engineering company to achieve beyond net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
