ROTHERHAM United have drawn up their summer wanted list as new manager Matt Hamshaw prepares for his first transfer window in the hot-seat.

The 43-year-old will make additions to the squad he inherited from Steve Evans a month ago and also instigate some departures from AESSEAL New York Stadium.

“We've got a number of targets, not just two or three," he said. “There might be an opportunity to get a bargain, there might be a situation where we have to pay a little bit more. That's the market.”

Hamshaw has two matches of the present season left to negotiate before he can get down to the business of reviving the Millers in readiness for the 2025/26 League One campaign.

Rotherham will make their best pitch to the players they have prioritised but the new man accepts that there will be some rejection along the way.

“A rebuild is always hard,” he said. "I don’t think any club will say they get everything right. It takes time.

“It’s not a case of clicking your fingers and you get every player you want. I wish I could, but I am well aware I won’t. It could be it’s our second, third or fourth choice that we get – that doesn’t mean to say they are bad players.

“There are areas that we need to progress. The (recruitment) meetings I have had so far have all been positive. It’s an interesting time, it's a time. I'm really looking forward to and one that fans should look forward to. Change is a good thing.”

Hamshaw isn't seeking only to strengthen his playing department, he also intends to increase the size of his backroom team.

No arrivals will happen until the close season but negotiations with potential appointments have already begun.

“I am in talks with different people,” the manager said. “I am not going to just go down a route of ‘I have been close to him, he’s my mate, I am going to bring him in’.

“I am going to make sure I get out and speak to as many people as I can. It’s important we get the right people. If you don't get the right people it can have dire consequences.

“I don’t want ‘yes’ men, I want people who will challenge me and know what it takes to be at this club.”

The Millers are in 13th spot as they gear up for Sunday's trip to Stevenage and the final-day home clash with Peterborough United a week tomorrow.

Even though his side are in a position mid-table safety, Hamshaw is demanding all-out effort from his players after being annoyed by what he witnessed in a 1-0 away loss against Wigan Athletic on Easter Monday

“I don't want to dismiss the last two games because they are important,” he said. “It feels strange that there is nothing riding on them. I don't like that; I didn't like it at Wigan.

“Fundamentally, players are still playing for their careers at this club. We took a lot of fans to Wigan and I just felt that we coasted. And I can't stand coasting.”
