Playing out from the back ... is it here to stay for Rotherham United?

MANAGER Paul Warne has vowed to persevere with Rotherham United's new policy of playing the ball out of defence.

The Millers boss shouldered the blame for the errors that saw his side concede an equaliser from their own goal-kick in the 1-1 draw with Watford yesterday.

However, he is adamant a fresh approach is necessary as the team, who have lost only once in seven games on their return to the Championship, bid to establish themselves in the second tier.

In the past Rotherham’s style has been labelled "direct" but the summer's ins and outs have left them with a strikeforce brimming with pace in Chiedozie Ogbene and Conor Washington yet lacking real height.

"Everyone expects us to go long but if you're playing Wash and Chieo up front and all you're doing is kicking long goal-kicks the ball is coming back at you," Warne said.

"We're trying to evolve the team, we're trying to play out from the back if it's on. But everything has to be in place to do it, everyone has to be in their position.

"We took the goal-kick and three of the lads were facing the wrong way. We hadn't worked on it a great deal. It's my fault really. I possibly shouldn't have encouraged them to do it until everyone had it on lockdown."

The goal-kick led to a Watford throw-in and the Hornets duly scored from it in the 33th minute to put an end to the Millers' blistering start that had seen the home side take an early lead through Richard Wood at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

"Unfortunately, this time we've been punished," Warne said. "Apart from that, we limited them to very little in the first half.

"We have a week now where we don't have a midweek game so we can keep trying to do it in training."
