ROTHERHAM United began life after Paul Warne with a loss as they gave up their unbeaten Championship home record to Wigan Athletic at AESSEAL New York Stadium this afternoon.

The Millers failed to fire in their first match since the departure of their former manager and his coaching staff last week.

Senior pros Richard Wood and Lee Peltier are in caretaker charge and captain Wood played a full part in the contest while defender Peltier directed proceedings from the dugout.

Wigan have yet to taste defeat away from home and left with all three points thanks to an early goal - the only time Rotherham have conceded in the opening half an hour this season - and another in the closing stages.

The expected second-half push from the Millers as they went towards the North Stand never really materialised and visiting goalkeeper Ben Amos didn't have a save to make after the interval.

Wood and Peltier's interim reign was only 12 minutes old when their side fell behind.

Appeals for offside were ignored as Charlie Wyke broke down the right and when the ball was pulled back Will Keane stroked it into the roof of the net.

Eight minutes later, Wes Harding tried his luck for the Millers from outside the area after being fed by Brooke Norton-Cuffy and stung the hands of the diving Amos who pushed the shot away for a corner.

The game was being played in warm, autumnal weather and the visitors had the better of the opening exchanges.

New York was close to a sell-out and both sets of fans were making plenty of noise.

Tom Naylor's fierce effort for Wigan was deflected wide as Rotherham struggled to find their rhythm.

The home team sprang to life on 30 minutes with a lightning break and it took a brilliant goalline clearance from James McClean to deny Chiedozie Ogbene after the attacker's curling shot had beaten Amos.

Wood headed wide and his complaints to the referee that there had been a Wigan infringement fell on deaf ears.

Ref Andy Davies became an unpopular man at New York as a number of contentious decisions went the Latics' way.

Brooke Norton-Cuffy was a regular menace down the right with his mazy runs and dangerous crosses. Rotherham looked much more dangerous towards the break but no leveller came by half-time.

Wood and Peltier had sprung no surprises with their first team selection, picking the same starting 11 you'd have expected during Warne's reign.

Peltier wasn't named in the squad as he took charge of proceedings in the dugout.

Soon after the restart, Viktor Johansson took charge of Max Power's deflected shot but there were few other attempts on goal as both sides fought for superiority.

The referee continued to attract the ire of the home fans as he allowed Wigan's time-wasting to go unpunished.

Finally a booking for keeper Amos came but it took until the 76th minute.

With eight minutes to go, McClean got through on goal and was foiled by a wonder-save from Johansson who pushed his shot around the post.

However, when the corner came in it was nodded into the path of Tom Naylor who headed home Wigan's game-clinching second goal.
