Jon Taylor scored his first goal for the club in the first half before the visitors hit back through Matt Mills’ header from a corner at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Defender Darnell Fisher received his marching orders for a second bookable offence with less than ten minutes remaining before Apostolos Vellios put Forest in front with a sublime overhead kick moments later.

But the Millers dug deep to find a late equaliser when sub Lee Frecklington won the ball high up the field and fed Taylor, who turned in the area and curled home for his second of the match.

“You see Saturday’s draw (2-2 against Bristol City) can feel like a loss whereas tonight feels like a moral victory, even though it’s not,” said Stubbs after the frantic match.

“I’m delighted for the players, I’m all about the players. It’s not about me. Even when we did things at Hibs, people said I must feel a lot of pride, I’ve got pride in my players.

“I’m delighted for them because they should have got three points tonight, I’m more disappointed that we haven’t.

“But I’m pleased with the performance and if we can consistently keep doing that at that level, we’ll take more points than not.”

It was the battling display that pleased Stubbs the most on a night when heads could have dropped, both on the pitch and in the stands.

“Sometimes you do get your rewards if you put the effort in,” said Stubbs.

“It would have been very easy for the players to feel sorry for themselves and think ‘here we go again’ when we were down to ten men but they kept going, you wouldn’t have thought we were down to ten at times when we were going forward.

“I thought tonight when we went 2-1 behind, you could see from the fans’ reaction that they thought the players didn’t deserve that, they were right behind the team again.”
