Matt Taylor's apology to travelling Ipswich Town fans as Rotherham United match is hit by late flood postponement

Torrential rain caused by Storm Babet has fallen all day and numerous flood alerts are in place all over town.

This morning, the Millers were confident the Championship clash, which was due to be televised live by Sky, would go ahead, but the rapidly-rising levels of the River Don changed that.

Flooding occurred around the perimeter of the ground, leading to Don Street, one of the routes into the stadium, being closed to the public, and the game was postponed to protect supporters' safety.

The decision was taken following urgent discussions between the Millers, the Safety Advisory Group - which includes representatives from Rotherham Borough Council and South Yorkshire Police - and the EFL.

"It's so disappointing that the game isn't on," said first-team manager Matt Taylor who had already arrived at New York. "We understand that the safety of supporters is paramount. First things first, we've got to apologise to all the fans who've made the journey tonight."

The Tractor Boys had sold out the away end and more than 2,000 of their supporters were due to attend the Championship clash.

A statement from the Millers said: "Throughout the day the pitch has remained playable but, with the safety of everyone attending the match at the height of our priorities, the difficult decision to postpone has been taken.

"The decision was relayed to the EFL and our counterparts at Ipswich Town, with all parties in agreement that postponing the fixture was the only possible way to ensure the safety of players, staff and supporters."
