MATCHDAY CENTRE: Stubbs reacts to first win of the season

ALAN Stubbs had no complaints with the way Rotherham United got their season up and running - and earned his first victory in charge.

The Millers chief admitted the 1-0 success over Brentford had been far from an easy ride. That was also no different than he expected, prompting Stubbs to praise the attitude and determination of his players.

"I thought they showed a lot of character," he said. "We knew Brentford would cause us problems, they move the ball really well. We also knew there would be times when we would have to be patient and diligent and defend.

"We've played some top teams and had a really tough start and I'm delighted for the players that they got the three points and our season off and running.

"It's a nice boost for any match but we've got our first local derby coming up, against Barnsley, and derbies speak for themselves, the players will be up for that game."

After the heavy defeats at Aston Villa and Brighton, the NYS offered something of a sanctuary for the Millers, who had draw there with Wolves on the opening day.

"It is important to win every week but in this league it is extra difficult," said Stubbs. "We want to be strong at home and from that point of view it was a good result."

He also confirmed that new signing Tom Adeyemi had been withdrawn at half time due to a thigh problem, although it was not thought to be serious.
