Manager Matt Taylor addresses the away form that is marring Rotherham United's Championship season

MANAGER Matt Taylor surveyed the defeat that stretched Rotherham United's winless run on their travels to 18 matches and said the club's away woe stretches back further than his time in the hot-seat.

The 21st-placed Millers fell to a dismal 3-0 Championship loss at Millwall last night and remain without a point on opposition soil in four attempts this season.

They last tasted victory on the road more than ten months ago, when they won the South Yorkshire derby at Sheffield United, and will be in danger of another second-tier relegation if the run continues.

Taylor, who succeeded Paul Warne as boss in October, said: "The away form has been poor for far too long at Championship level, not just during my reign at this club."

Rotherham fell behind before the break at the New Den and then shipped two more goals after the break on an evening when their margin of defeat could have been heavier.

“We've been excellent in structured games, but when the game is a little bit more messy, a little bit more direct with a high tempo, we struggle a little bit,” Taylor said.

“We struggle with the physicality in moments of the game. That was the frustrating part tonight. I pick the team, I understand our weaknesses, you nullify them as best you can. That certainly didn't work tonight.”

The manager helped to keep the Millers in the Championship last term and led them to three points at Stoke City as well as at Bramall Lane. They were the only two away triumphs of the campaign.

In the 2020/21 season, when they went down, they won on five occasions away from AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Taylor switched from 4-3-3 to a 3-5-2 formation against the Lions and handed first starts to striker Sam Nombe, midfielder Sam Clucas and wing-back Sebastian Revan in a side showing three changes to the 2-0 reverse at Huddersfield Town five days earlier.

When asked if he thought his team had too many 'passengers' in south-east London, he said of his players: “They're there, they're on the pitch, they're involved in the action. It's ultimately who comes out on top in all those little moments.

“We played against a strong home team who were probably smarting from the weekend (3-0 defeat to Leeds United).”
