Interest elsewhere as Rotherham United set Dominic Iorfa deadline

The free agent has been training with the Millers

Rotherham United face competition for the signature of Dominic Iorfa as they wait to hear whether the centre-half will accept their offer of a contract at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The Millers are keen to add the centre-half to their League Two squad and have given the free agent until tomorrow to decide whether he wants to commit his future to the club.

At least one other side - from the division above - is also coveting his services.

"We're still waiting," boss Alex Bruce told the Advertiser after yesterday's 3-3 home draw with Salford City had left his team in 16th spot. "I think there are a couple of clubs sniffing around him, as you can imagine."

Bruce would love to have the experience of the 31-year-old at his disposal. There is talent in the Rotherham backline but all the of the present players are at the younger end of the age scale.

There are two encouraging factors for the Millers in their chase for Iorfa who played nearly 100 times for Wolverhampton Wanderers and then made more than 200 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday before parting company with the Owls at the end of last season.

The Southend-born defender has already been training with them and has enjoyed his time at Roundwood.

Also, he already lives in the town, has children at school in the area and is very settled in the north.

The Advertiser understands that the League One team showing the most interest in him isn't a major club at that level and is in the south.

Rotherham, after spending seven years in the Championship in the last 12 years, are a major concern in the fourth tier and look to be making real progress under Bruce who took the hot-seat only two and a half months ago.

They don't want the matter to drag on and have set a deadline for an answer.

"Monday," said Bruce.

Meanwhile, Salford boss Peter Cklamovski believes that his player, Abraham Odoh, should have been given a penalty rather than being sent off in the second half at New York.

The City wide man tumbled in the box and claimed that he'd been tripped by Brendan Cover.

However, referee Dean Whitestone booked him for diving and a second yellow card saw the wide man dismissed when the score was 3-2.

"I initially thought it was a penalty because there was definitely some contact and Abraham is going at speed as well," Cklamovski said.

"It's the referee's decision. I don't know if it was a dive. It didn't look like a dive. It looked like there was contact in the box. I don't know what you're supposed to do if you're going at speed and you've got contact."

Rotherham trailed 2-0 after 31 minutes, hit back to lead and then conceded a 78th-minute spot-kick to throw away a victory against the 10-man visitors

"I thought a great game of football between two very good teams, Cklamovski said. "The crowd did an amazing job to create an atmosphere that was exciting for the players and everyone watching.

"In the first 30 minutes or so, we deserved the 2-0 lead and played some really good stuff. It was a really crazy five-minute period for us to concede two goals in that first half. It was a devastating sort of period that we didn't handle well.

"We absorbed it, got into half-time, reset and refocused. We had the aim to get out there for the second half and build our game back up.

"I'm proud of our players' commitment, professionalism and desire. I feel a little bit like we dropped two points. At the same time, we respect the opposition and take the one point."
