Goalkeeper Josh Vickers extends his stay at Rotherham United

GOALKEEPER Josh Vickers has signed a new two-year deal at Rotherham United, keeping him at the club until 2023.

The former Lincoln City man initially joined last year as a back-up to Viktor Johansson and Chelsea loanee Jamal Blackman after the departure of long-serving Lewis Price.

Although Vickers didn't play a first team game last term due to the form of the men in front of him, Blackman's return to London and the drop to League One offers the stopper, still only 25, the chance of more opportunities next season.

Vickers told the club's official website: “I’m delighted, I had a year here last season to get to know everyone and it was a no-brainer for me to sign a new deal with the club.

“Last year we had a great group and we were pushing each other every day. That can only help people perform better each day. I’m looking forward to working with Viktor again and we’re going to push each other this year and see what happens.

“Last year I signed quite late, so it is a massive bonus to have everything sorted out early this time around.

“It really helps knowing exactly where I’m going to be next season and not having to worry about my future, I now can’t wait to get going for pre-season.

“We’d have loved to have stayed in the Championship, but it is a new year and a new challenge."

Billericay-born Vickers has also played for Swansea City and Barnet.
