FREAKISHLY lucky or opportunistically brilliant?

Who knows if Andre Green meant the amazing effort that lit up the pre-season derby between Rotherham United and visitors Sheffield United this evening.

What can be said for definite is that it will have done the trialist no harm in his bid to earn a contract with the Millers.

The former Aston Villa attacker, a free agent after spending two years in Slovakia with Slovan Bratislava, was playing the second and final match of his spell with the club and a decision one way or other on a deal is imminent.

Supporters have taken to the 24-year-old who received a wam ovation when he went off early in the second half.

The clash saw Championship Rotherham go up against Premier League opposition and they gave their most encouraging performance of their summer programme so far.

Both teams started brightly and it was the Blades who had the first sight of goal as Iliman Ndiaye shot from the edge of the area in the eighth minute but couldn't find the power to trouble Viktor Johansson.

Three minutes later, the Millers went ahead with one of the most remarkable goals ever seen at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Green's 'scorpion' flick from a tight angle after Jordan Hugill had challenge for a header had no right to go in but looped over Wes Foderingham into the net.

Two matches, two goals for the forward.

Rotherham were playing well and Tyler Blackett's cushioned volley from Cafu's corner was only inches away from doubling the lead.

The visitors had brought a 3,000-plus away following but most of the noise was coming from the home sections of the ground.

Cafu stung the left palm of Foderingham who had to be at full stretch to keep out a long-range curler and then the Millers midfielder came even closer to a goal as he rattled the bar with a thumping free-kick from 30 yards out.

In between those efforts, a stunning Johansson save denied Daniel Jebbison from close range and an equally-stunning block from Cameron Humphreys thwarted the same player on the follow-up.

Having restricted the Blades to efforts from distance as the half wore on, Rotherham went in at the break deserving to be in front.

The Millers were without a number of senior players, with midfielder Jamie Lindsay, winger Shane Ferguson and strikers Josh Kayode and Tom Eaves all not yet quite ready for action.

Two defenders who started last Saturday's win at Mansfield Town, Sean Morrison and Lee Peltier, also missed out.

Soon after the restart, Cohen Bramall played in Ben Wiles whose fierce shot from a tight angle wasn't far off goal as it flew into the North Stand.

At the other end, Johansson was once more equal to Jebbison's threat when the Blades broke at pace and the striker managed to get the better of Grant Hall as he raced in on goal.

Both teams made a raft of changes as the clock ticked down and the contest eased towards its conclusion with neither side creating any more opportunities.

A good result for the Millers, a good night for them.

Now for the Green verdict.
