JOSH Vickers is returning to training this week with the shadow of surgery still hanging over Rotherham United’s back-up goalkeeper.

The 27-year-old has failed to make the last four Millers squads after injuring his shoulder in December during a training workout at the club’s Roundwood complex.

He had an injection in his troublesome joint on Tuesday and Rotherham are hoping that will bring the problem to an end.

However, going under the knife will be the next course of action if he experiences any difficulties as he rejoins coach Scott Brown’sgroup.

“We’re still not out of the woods in terms of surgery,” manager Matt Taylor said.

“The medical people are saying we don’t lose anything by giving him an injection and trying to get him out on the training pitch.

“If the issue recurs or the shoulder shows the same damage as it did three weeks previously then he’ll have the operation.”

Vickers, whose contract is due to end in the summer, has been restricted to two League cup appearances this season by the form of Viktor Johansson and he hasn’t played for the first team since August.

Scottish youngster Robbie Hemfrey has been filling in on the bench in his absence.
