The Rotherham United defender is on his fourth lay-off since the summer because of an ankle problem during the 0-0 draw against Wycombe Wanderers last week.

Manager Paul Warne says Mattock won’t be seen again before the next international break, meaning the 31-year-old’s comeback won’t happen until the November 20 match against Cambridge United at the earliest.

“He’s out for a bit of time,” the boss confirmed. “It’s grade 2 ligament damage on his ankle.

“His injury is independent of his previous issues. He’s twisted his ankle quite severely.”

Ankle surgery cost the player four months of the last campaign and since July he has been hit by two separate achilles complaints and hamstring trouble, restricting him to eight appearances this term.

Teenage striker Jerome Greaves has completed his rehabilitation after pulling his hamstring and has returned to Northern Premier League Premier Division side Matlock Town on loan.
