Drone pilot who interrupted Millers match could face police action

A DRONE pilot who interrupted Rotherham United’s derby game against Sheffield Wednesday has been identified — but police have not arrested the culprit.

A spokesperson for the Millers said play was temporarily halted on Wednesday night due to safety concerns about the unauthorised drone being in the airspace around the New York Stadum.

Eagle-eyed stewards had spotted the drone during the first half and told match officials, who stopped the game.

They took the players off the field as a safety precaution, said the club spokesperson.

The club worked with the police to identify the pilot and the drone has been seized.

The club spokesperson said the drone’s presence in the stadium’s airspace was not a threat.

They said the Millers would work with the police to determine whether further action was necessary.

A police spokeswoman said no-one had been arrested or charged but enquiries were ongoing.

Rotherham United beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-0, defeating them in a home league match for the first time since 1976.
