Could there be a free agent through the door at Rotherham United by Saturday?

MANAGER Matt Taylor is hoping that Rotherham United's free-agent hunt will lead to a new arrival before the weekend.

The Millers are in talks with players who are without clubs - and can therefore be signed outside of the recently-closed transfer window - and the boss revealed progress is being made in the pursuit of one of their targets.

“I'd like to have positive news by Saturday but there are no guarantees,” he said. “We're getting closer to a deal.”

Rotherham's initial search centred on centre-halves and attacking wide midfielders.

The Advertiser understands, however, that the need for a new defender is now considered less acute and that the priority is to strengthen on the flanks.

Any new player would need time to get up to speed because of their lack of pre-season training.

A worry for the Millers is that rival teams could suddenly enter the reckoning and scupper a potential deal at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

“Any club could phone up a free agent at any stage and then we're in a market we don't want to be in,” Taylor said. “Nothing is definite until a player has actually signed the contract.”
