Clock is ticking on Millers' hunt for midfielder
With the clock ticking towards tomorrow's 5pm deadline for permanent deals, manager Paul Warne is trying to bring in a central midfielder.
The situation is complicated by the fact that as time runs out, selling clubs are in a stronger position and asking prices escalate.
Warne is still keeping tabs on Richie Towell's situation at Brighton and has been linked with Northampton Town's Matt Crooks.
The 24-year-old enhanced his reputation last season at Sixfields, enough to put him on the radar of a clutch of clubs.
After their relegation to League Two, Northampton are braced for moves for a couple of their players but manager Dean Austin says there has been no serious interest so far.
"There have been one or two bits talked about and a few conversations but nothing serious enough for us to think about losing the players of the quality we have here," he said.

We understand that reports of fresh interest from the Millers in Scunthorpe United's Duane Holmes are wide of the mark.
Nottingham Forest's Ryan Yates is another possible option but the 20-year-old impressed during pre-season and manager Aitor Karanka is minded to keep him. His future may not be decided until much nearer the August 31 loans deadline.
Millers assistant manager Richie Barker said: “We have had a couple of conversations this week but there are others clubs who are looking to do business so there are other offers to compete with.
“Once we are at the stage of sitting down with a player then we need to persuade them that this is the place for them to come and play their football. We will be working hard over the next couple of days but there is still the loan market which stays open until the end of August.
“Ideally we want players in as quick as possible but it is not the end of the world if it is not done by Thursday because the loan window stays open. We want to get the right person and if that means we have to wait an extra week then so be it.”
Rotherham United are hosting a fans' forum at the AESSEAL New York Stadium on Thursday, August 30 (7pm-9pm) when fans will have the chance to discuss important topics with the Millers hierarchy.
The club will open the floor to questions but people can also submit them before the night by dropping an e-mail to [email protected]
