Boss Paul Warne on the prospect of a Rotherham United debut for Will Grigg tomorrow

DEADLINE-DAY signing Will Grigg may make his first appearance for Rotherham United when the Millers embark on their EFL Trophy campaign tomorrow.

The striker has joined the club on a season-long loan from Sunderland and manager Paul Warne is contemplating giving him an outing in the group-stage clash against Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Rotherham want the 30-year-old to be as sharp as possible for a potential League One outing on Saturday at home to Fleetwood Town.

“Griggy could play against Doncaster,” said Warne, who will make sweeping changes for the tie as he looks to involve players who have been on the fringes of selection.

The match will see a debut for left-back Tolaji Bola, signed last month from Arsenal, and another summer signing, Hakeem Odoffin, is also pencilled in to start.

“I’ve spoken to Tolaji and said it must be frustrating for him because he can’t get in,” said Warne. “In the next game I can let him have a run-out.

“I want him to play, I want Haks to play, I want Reg (Rarmani Edmonds-Green) to play. I still want to win the match but I’ll give game-time to players who I think need it.

“I’ll include the pros who haven’t played so much and get them up to speed. 

“Hopefully, I’ll also include a couple of youth-team players who have been doing really well.”

Rovers provide the opposition for the second match in succession and Mickel Miller is a likely starter despite his straight red card in Rotherham’s 2-0 derby win at AESSEAL New York Stadium nine days ago.

The winger received a three-match ban but that applies only to league competition.

The Millers have a trio of teenagers out on non-league loans and they can bring back all three for the EFL Trophy fixture.

Warne is considering using Guiseley duo Jake Hull and Jacob Gratton but will leave Jerome Greaves at Matlock Town.

“Jerome isn’t fit enough yet for a first-team game,” he said. “He had a disrupted pre-season. He’s been playing for around 60 minutes for Matlock.”

Definitely out of contention are Wes Harding, Shane Ferguson and Josh Kayode who are all away on international duty.

Rovers could include former Rangers and Wigan Athletic striker Joe Dodoo after the free agent signed a two-year deal today.

Kick-off is 7pm.
