Boss Paul Warne on the effect the transfer window had on Rotherham United trio Ben Wiles, Dan Barlaser and Chiedozie Ogbene

BOSS Paul Warne admits that Rotherham United’s wanted men will have had their heads turned by interest in them during the transfer window.

Midfielders Ben Wiles and Dan Barlaser were the subject of bids from rival Championship sides while attacker Chiedozie Ogbene also had his admirers.

All three remained at AESSEAL New York Stadium beyond September 1’s close of business and Warne is backing them to overcome any disappointment at not landing a lucrative move and continue to give their all in the Millers’ mission to establish themselves as a second-tier side.

“I don’t expect my starlets to be unaffected by it,” he said. “They will be affected, that’s the truth.

“My Rotherham United hat is that these lads want to be here forever and they all have Millers tattoos. That isn’t the case. They are brilliant kids, but no different to anybody else: they have careers to pursue and money to earn.

“I expect them to be a little bit disappointed but I’d like to think, knowing them as well as I do, that it won’t affect them for long. I don’t expect them to down tools.”

The best of three bids promotion favourites Burnley submitted for Wiles during the window topped £2 million while Blackpool made several attempts to land Barlaser and offered more than £1m for his services.

The late swoops on deadline day that Rotherham were fearing never materialised.

Warne highlighted the difficulty of his players staying focused when suitors are making behind-the-scenes contact with them in the build-up to submitting offers.

“Clubs who want to sign them speak to them before making any bid,” he said. “The lads are well aware of every club that want to sign them.

“They know every school in the areas local to those clubs and know every house they can buy. They go on Rightmove.

“They know every penny they can earn and what squad number they can have. They know everything.

“That is difficult. They are young men. It is all right me sitting here at the age of 49 saying to them: ‘Look, you will get other opportunities.’”

Wiles, Barlaser and Ogbene all played well in the match immediately after the close of the window: the 1-1 home draw with high-flying Watford.

Meanwhile, Rotherham made 11 summer signings and the manager emphasised the importance of the research and background checks the Millers undertake in the process of deciding a potential target is the right fit for them

“We bring only good people,” he said. “I could get a player from another club who sounds amazing and all the fans think: ‘Oh, he’s great.’

“But he could be the one who comes in and goes: ‘Oh, that is disgusting, you need to do this and that and refuse to play.’ That has happened at other clubs.”
