Jordan Hugill's header would have given the Millers a fourth-minute lead against Coventry City at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

However, referee Keith Stroud disallowed it for a supposed Conor Coventry infringement on Sky Blues goalkeeper Ben Wilson and the visitors went on to win 2-0, a result that leaves the home side one place and two points above the bottom three.

"We should have been ahead," said Taylor who was taking charge of his 250th match as  a boss. "I can’t understand why the foul has been given. It’s an injustice. There has not been a collision in there."

Rotherham conceded just after the break and then again in stoppage time as they went down to a second successive loss following a run of four games without a defeat.

Between goals from Jamie Allen and Viktor Gyokeres, they had chased an equaliser to no avail.

“The first-half performance was good enough," Taylor said. "As the second half went on, when we were behind, the pressure mounted and our execution let us down.

“Coventry are not a team you want to be chasing the game against."

City manager Mark Robins, a former Millers striker and boss, praised his team for taking control of the contest after the interval.

He said: “It’s a good victory because these are a difficult team to play against. They tried to win the game and were brave.

“First half, it looked like we were playing our third game in a week. There were too many turnovers.

“At half-time, we talked about upping the work rate ten per cent and how that would win us the game.

“We came out with control and impetus and got the goal that gave us a leg up in the game. I think we were in control in the second half.

"The first goal helped. We defended really, really well."
