ROTHERHAM United are offering a new contract to Sean Morrison as they seek to keep the experienced defender at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The centre-half joined in January after being on Cardiff City’s injured list for a year and managed only two appearances before suffering thigh damage that required surgery.

But the Millers believe it is worth taking a further risk on the 32-year-old who has operated at the top end of the Championship or in the Premier League for most of his career and are optimistic an agreement can be reached.

“There’s a serious chance,” said manager Matt Taylor. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for him and the club. We want the right type of character and player. He certainly fits the bill in both cases.”

The boss was meeting with Morrison at Roundwood this week to tell him he is still a wanted man in S60.

The centre-back was sidelined in South Wales for 12 months with a cruciate knee ligament problem and would have been out of Rotherham’s reach had his fitness record been better because bigger clubs would have swooped following his release by the Bluebirds.

He came to the Millers on a short-term deal until the end of their second-tier campaign, finding himself a home in the area, and has been a big dressing-room influence as the squad have sealed their second-tier safety.

Taylor hinted that the club’s package is likely to contain a significant ‘pay as you play’ element.

“Sean is still out injured as it stands,” the manager said. “We have to be inventive in terms of what we offer.”

Plymouth-born Morrison spent eight and a half years with Cardiff, becoming their skipper, and has more than 400 career appearances to his name.
