Andre Green out for nearly a year as Rotherham United injury crisis worsens

ROTHERHAM United attacker Andre Green has suffered an injury that will rule him out for the rest of the club's Championship campaign.

The summer signing ruptured his achilles tendon in training during the recent international break and is looking at nearly a year on the sidelines.

It's another devastating blow for the depleted Millers who already have a packed treatment room as they bid to pull off another second-tier survival feat.

Cameron Humphreys had surgery on a torn hamstring earlier this month, fellow centre-half Tyer Blackett is due to undergo a similar procedure for the same problem and winger Shane Ferguson has just had a third hernia operation which has ended his hopes of a November return after six months on the sidelines.

Green will have a repair op on Friday - around the same time he is due to become a father for the first time.

“It's so unfortunate for Andre, his family and the club,” said manager Matt Taylor whose team are at home to Coventry City on Wednesday evening.

“It was something that happened when no-one was near him on the training pitch. They're always the worst ones. You could sense a few seconds after he went down how serious it was. He went straight off to hospital with the medical staff.

“The recovery time is close to 12 months. We look forward to this time next season and welcoming him back in some capacity.”

Green, aged 25, joined Rotherham in August after a two-year spell in Slovakia with Slovan Bratislava and had been a regular starter in the early stages of the campaign despite missing most of pre-season while he found a new club.

“We felt we were just getting him closer to match sharpness,” Taylor said. “His contributions were getting better.

“I've spoken to him a couple of times since the injury. It's a big week for him. His partner is due to give birth and he's going to have his operation.

“As disappointed as he is to be out of action, having a baby is a major life event in the other direction. It's such a positive thing for him and his family.

“The injury has happened now. We can't stay sad forever in terms of what we're missing out on, we just have to support him. It will be a long road to recovery.”
