Joe Powell adds to list of departures from Rotherham United

ROTHERHAM United have another space in their squad to fill next season following the departure of Joe Powell.

The 27-year-old midfielder joined League Two rivals Salford City yesterday on a free transfer after the expiration of his contract.

At the end of last season Powell was one of three players who had been in discussions over the prospect of a new deal alongside Jack Holmes and Josh Ayres.

Instead he is hooking up with last season’s beaten play-off finalists and becomes Salford’s first signing under new manager Peter Cklamovski, the club's replacement for Karl Robinson.

Powell said he hoped to "bring a bit of excitement" to his new team.

"I've got a lot to give, hopefully I can put that on show. You can expect to see a lot of desire, a lot of passion,” he said.

"I'll cover every blade of grass that I can, and on top of that I can bring quality with the final pass, breaking the lines, some long distance shots."

Schooled at West Ham, Powell joined the Millers from Burton two years ago under the management of Steve Evans.

He turned out more than 90 times, scoring twice.

Rotherham have have yet to appoint a Head Coach to work alongside new Head of Football Steve McClaren with the start of pre-season training just over a week away.

A total of 11 players left the club in the wake of relegation from League One and it subsequently decided not to take up 12-month contract extensions on Shaun McWilliams and Dru Yearwood. Ayres has also departed.

The players under contract are: Joe Rafferty, Kian Spence, Sam Nombe, Ar’Jany Martha, Ted Cann, Marvin Kaleta, Lenny Agbaire, Denzel Hall, Hamish Douglas, Brandon Cover, Emmanuel Adegboyega, James Clarke, Kane Richardson and Reece Wilson.

Announcing Powell’s departure, Rotherham United said the discussions with him had to “come to an amicable conclusion, with the player opting to pursue a new challenge,” and wished him all the best.
