Why an operation is the only option for Rotherham United's Tyler Blackett

MANAGER Matt Taylor has revealed the reason why Tyler Blackett has been forced into surgery to repair the serious hamstring damage the Rotherham United centre-half sustained earlier this month.

The Millers had hoped the 29-year-old would escape the need for for an operation after suffering a severe tear in the dying seconds of the October 4 Championship clash with Bristol City at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

But the player's date with a specialist last Wednesday ended their optimism and the defender is due to go under the knife tomorrow.

“A week to ten days in, there was no sign that it had started to knit together in any way,” said Taylor as he explained the need for surgical intervention.

“I feel sorry for Tyler, but it should mean the injury heals better.”

The procedure is likely to add between four and six weeks to the former Manchester United youngster's already-lengthy recovery time.

After a short-term spell at New York last season, Blackett signed a one-year contract with Rotherham in the summer.

He had featured in every match in this campaign before misfortune struck against the Robins.

The Millers are at home to Coventry City tomorrow night.
