'He’s full of potential and able to develop' - National League club sign former Miller Josh Ayres
JOSH Ayres’ new club say they have signed a player packed with potential after his departure from Rotherham United.
Woking have taken the 20-year-old striker on a one-year deal, with the option of a further year, just a week after he left AESSEAL New York Stadium.
Ayres came through youth ranks at Rotherham and played 11 times last season as well as netting a couple of goals in the Vertu Trophy.
He will now look to advance his career under the guidance of Woking manager Jermain Defoe, the former England and Premier League attacker.
Woking’s Director of Football, Jody Brown, said: “At 6’5 Josh is a different profile to anything else we have in the building, and he gives us another dimension.
“The manager really likes his attributes and his age. He’s full of potential and able to develop.
"It is also pleasing to see how eager Josh is to get in and work with Jermain and the staff.”
Ayres had a loan stint at Alfreton last season and scored five goals in 11 games.
In non-league terms he’ll be stepping up a level at Woking, who finished mid-table in the National League last season.
Added Brown: “Josh has already played in League One and had an impressive loan at Alfreton as well as a couple other loans before that, so he’s had a good amount of senior experience. This next step is really important.”
