FOOTBALL: Skipper savours "incredible" debut for Rotherham United Women at AESSEAL New York Stadium

ROTHERHAM United Women's team captain hailed a "brilliant" night as they marked their first game at AESSEAL New York Stadium by lifting a trophy.

The Millers beat Mansfield Town Ladies 4-3 on penalties to clinch the inaugural 'Her Game Too' Shield after the contest had finished 0-0.

A crowd of 1,124 — a record for a RU Women's Game — were there to see them triumph.

Skipper Lori-Anne Tart said: "It was a great end to the season and what a brilliant turnout.

"I think the previous best we got at home was around 300 on National Women's Day so to get more than 1,000 is incredible. It's a massive crowd for us."

The bigger pitch took some getting used to for both teams and chances were at a premium in normal time. A smart save from Millers stopper Georgia Ward late on ensured the contest went to a penalty shootout.

Added Lori-Anne: "It's a nice pitch to play on and apart from bits of fitness and things like that I think it suits our style of play alot better. Once we found a little bit of rhythm we were able to build into the game and the win just capped it off.

"We'll be on at everyone to get another game here!"

The Her Game Too Shield is set to be an annual event on the calendar, bringing with it the chance of more appearances for the Women at the New York Stadium.

Team manager Pete Jarvis added: "It was a friendly but it was a fantastic occasion and we've come away from it with a lot of encouragement and a lot of love for the club.

"Hopefully we can take that forward to next season and get a few down to support us at Roundwood."
