Evans sounds rallying call

GARETH Evans says it's time Rotherham United checked their wretched run of form and started paying back their loyal supporters.

The 23-year-old forward has had mixed fortunes since his summer switch from Bradford City.

He's been in decent form, chipping in with a handful of goals, but has been powerless to stop the team's slide down League Two.

That wasn't part of the plan when he signed, reckoning he was joining a team of promotion challengers by making the short trip down the M1.

Despite frustration at the way things have gone, Evans believes he could still be plying his trade in League One next term but says the players are going to have to re-double their efforts if they're to justify the pre-season enthusiasm of people in and around the club.

He told the Advertiser: "We need to be challenging. I didn't sign for this club to be in the bottom half. I saw it as a club that was going up with this manager and the ambitions there are here and everything. He sold it to me.

"I firmly believe we can turn this around and get in the top half and the play-offs and ultimately go up, but we need to start doing the basics right and until we do that then we're not going to get anything.

"The fans have been fantastic and to see them there at Bristol Rovers (last Friday) was very good. They've got behind us but we need to start paying them back with results on the pitch and until we do that then we're not going to be happy."
