Evans praises 'brave' Millers

ROTHERHAM United Steve Evans saluted his players after they snapped a run of three straight defeats with victory against Northampton Town on Saturday.

The Millers won 3-1 at the New York Stadium to leapfrog their visitors and climb back into the play-off positions in League Two. Daniel Nardiello opened the scoring with a 42nd minute penalty — his 14th goal of the season — before Ben Pringle and David Noble added to the tally in the last 15 minutes. Clarke Carlisle replied in stoppage time for the visitors.

Evans said: "It was important we matched the physicality of the most direct team in English football — and they've got some quality when they do it — but our boys stood up to that.

"We'd been under pressure at home, not winning, but we were brave and were an absolute credit.

"In the second half we got two goals and were probably unlucky not to get four or five."

Evans handed a debut to forward Jordan Slew, in on loan from Blackburn Rovers, while midfielder Noble made his first start since September and bagged his second goal in as many games having scored as a substitute the previous week.

"He could have an influential part to play this season because there is no better technical player when he gets on the ball," added Evans.

The Millers go to Burton Albion, a point in front, on Saturday.
