Evans eyes new striker

ROTHERHAM United boss Steve Evans has narrowed his search for a proven goal getter down to two names — but won't be paying over the odds.

Having been knocked back in moves for AFC Bournemouth's Matt Tubbs, Celtic's Tony Watt and Ryan Lowe in recent months, a player to give the Millers an extra cutting edge remains a top priority during the January transfer window.

The club are prepared to pay a fee, as shown by the previous six-figure bids lodged for Tubbs and AFC Wimbledon's Jack Midson.

But while mindful of who he wants, Evans says he won't break the bank to get his man.

"It is an either or (scenario). Our chief operating officer Paul Douglas has had a few chats with those people and we'll see where it goes," he said.

"At our level, we're talking good money, and if we do spend it we'll make sure we are prudent in doing so. We won't pay a penny more in a transfer fee or a weekly wage than what the valuation says and we are going to stick to that principle."

Beaten by Port Vale on Boxing Day, the Millers now face two games in four games, at home to lowly Accrington Stanley tomorrow and away to Rochdale on New Year's Day.
