The Young Lions were beaten 1-0 by Iceland in their Euro 2023 qualifier in front of a crowd of more than 4,000 at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

It was the first international game there since last summer’s Women’s Euros.

Orri Oskarsson’s second-half penalty made the difference and even though England played with more urgency after that, they were unable to conjure an equaliser.

With only one team from the group qualifying for Malta this summer, they must now beat Turkey in their final match at Chesterfield on Tuesday and hope Iceland, the new leaders, slip up against Hungary.

England U19: Beadle, Chambers (capt), Nelson (Walters 33), Wharton, Mubama (Perkins 72), Mainoo, Hall, Forson (Cleary 71), Phillips, Hall, Cozier-Duberry (Webster 78)

Attendance: 4,177
