End of an era for Town

AN era comes to an end for Rotherham Town this weekend when they play their last ever match in the ECB Yorkshire League.

The match at Appleby Frodingham will be their final bow in the current ring-fenced set-up before the league is broken up as part of an overhaul of local cricket.

But skipper Mark Cummins and his players will have no time for sentiment as they chase a victory which could clinch them third spot behind champions York and runners-up Barnsley.

While that falls short of the title that Town had in their sights for much of the summer, it still represents a significant sign of progress before big changes in 2016 which will see them do battle with the likes of Treeton, Aston Hall and Wickersley or Tickhill in a new Yorkshire League South.

That's why the result as much as the occasion is important for Cummins and his players tomorrow.

He said: “To be honest, we have been saying farewell to the Yorkshire League all season. We've said our goodbyes to each ground we've visited and we've managed to win at a few of them as well.

“We'll leave with some brilliant memories and speaking from a personal point of view, it is the strongest league I have played in.

“The good thing is that we started this season strongly and we've a chance to finish it strongly. If we were to finish third it would be an excellent achievement and would stamp a bit of a marker for the league changing next year. It would also be a reward for all the hard work the lads have put in.”
