Early goals sink Millers

ROTHERHAM United were punished for a slow start as they slipped to 2-0 defeat at Ipswich Town.

The two goals, both of which came in the opening six minutes, left them up against it and they were never able to recover despite having the better of the second half.

Daryl Murphy headed the opener from close range after Scott Loach, back at his old club, blocked an initial effort from home captain Luke Chambers. Steve Evans’ men were only just digesting that blow when David McGoldrick added the second from 20 yards.

They made in-form Ipswich work hard for the points and Jordan Bowery missed a good chance to reduce the arrears when he planted a free header at goalkeeper Dean Gerken.

After surviving a let-off straight after the interval when Conor Sammon seized on a short back pass and hit the post, the Millers got on top. Lee Frecklington, deputising as captain for the suspended Craig Morgan, and the recalled Ryan Hall went close.

Frazer Richardson also blazed a decent chance over but the home side, content to protect their lead, were able to close out their fourth straight Championship win.
