Cycling fun for all the family

FAMILIES are being invited to join in the fun at a town centre cycling festival on Sunday.

The event takes place alongside Rotherham's first ever cycling time trial event.

Rotherham Cycling Festival has a variety of activities for families, ranging from Scalextric, rides on the "smoothie-making" bike and a chance for families to ride the route of the time trial.

The closed circuit will be the focus of a guided family ride from 12.40pm-1pm. The ride is open to all ages, but youngsters must be able to manage a ¾ mile ride.

Cllr Denise Lelliott, Rotherham Council's Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, said: "Whether you are new to cycling or already cycle regularly, young or old, come along to Rotherham town centre and join the fun!

"The event is not just for seasoned cyclists — anyone with a roadworthy bike and helmet is welcome to come along and have a go at the time trial, or the family ride for under-11s.

"If you've seen our Olympic cyclists and fancied a go yourself, now's your chance."

The one-mile time trial does include some hills, but nothing the everyday cyclist cannot tackle. Cyclists aged 11-15 are invited to enter the junior competition which takes place from 10am-11 am.

Organisers are particularly seeking more female entrants in both the senior and junior categories of the time trial.

All riders will receive a certificate and there will be prizes for the fastest in each category. Adult entry costs £3, juniors £1 per person.

The Cycling Festival also feature a Kcarts arena (10am-1.30pm), displays from cycle manufacturers and cycle clothing manufacturers and interactive cycle stations.
