CRICKET: Sunday fund-raiser for young stroke victim Mateo Boulogne at Thorpe Hesley CC

CRICKETERS from near and further afield are rallying round to help a promising player struck down by a stroke in his prime.

Mateo Boulogne faces a long road to recovery after the setback as he was about to captain Thorpe Hesley & High Green’s first 11 in a match a month ago.

Players from the Yorkshire Southern Premier League and surrounding leagues are joining together for a T20 game at the club’s Smithywood Road ground on Sunday to raise funds to aid his recovery.

Among the raffle prizes are a bat signed by Yorkshire and England’s Joe Root and match tickets for The Hundred.

As well as turning in some sparkling batting performances for Thorpe over the last two seasons, the 21-year-old from St Lucia is a popular figure at the club.

Chairman Stephen Hague said: “This unexpected event has left us all in shock and deeply concerned for Mateo’s well-being.

“Mateo is an integral member of Thorpe Hesley & High Green Cricket Club and his passion for and dedication to the sport have been an inspiration to those who know him.”

A Go Fund Me page has also been set up at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/MateoBoulogne

Sunday’s match starts at 2pm and all support is welcome.
