Colts get a flier

ROTHERHAM Rugby Club Colts made a flying start to the New Year as they caned Keighley 44-10 to go six points clear at the top of the Yorkshire League.

Even though they could muster only 16 players, Rotherham started well with a try from Danny Howells. Keighley hit back with a converted try and a penalty before Luke Powell’s touch-down made it 10-10 at the break.

In the second half, once Howells had put his side back in front they cut loose. Alex Jones was next on the scoresheet with a well-worked score before Howells completed his hat-trick from the back of a maul.

Christopher Kapur and Alex Healey also scored, the latter after good work from Bradley Eades, while Howells went on to make it a memorable afternoon with his fourth.

Maximum points keep Rotherham in pole position with three games in hand on second-placed York.
