Bowls club makes appeal

A CROWN green bowls club is trying to hook new members to avoid having an “unlucky” 2013.

Members of the Clifton Park Bowls Club have called an extraordinary meeting on January 9 to discuss their future on the greens after a slump which has seen their numbers drop from 110 to around 40.

The meeting, to be held from 7pm at the Albion Road Working Men’s Club, off Wellgate, will see members hatch plans to attract new blood to the sport.

Club secretary John Mugglestone wants anyone interested in the club’s future — including those who might want to take up the sport — to get in touch.

He explained: “When I started as secretary five years ago, our membership numbers were healthy, but now we have a membership of around 40 and not all of them still play on a regular basis.

“It’s imperative that we attract some new blood or the club could fold.

“At local level we’re not getting the young aspiring talent coming through.”

John added: “Bowls might have a reputation for being an older person’s pass-time, but it is great fun and requires real skill. Plus, the costs involved really are very small.”

A season ticket at the Clifton Park Bowling Club costs £50 and allows participants to play all year round.

One-off bowling sessions of around two hours are priced at £2.90.
