Where Aston are renowned for a range of cars that are as fast and noisy as they are stunning, the diminutive Japanese runabout lies at the exact opposite end of the market, but that hasn't stalled the Gaydon engineers enthusiasm.
And although the Cygnet concept will come with a one-litre, three-cylinder engine under the hood rather than one of Aston's six-litre V12, it will still wear the famous winged Aston badge.
The Cygnet will only be offered to owners and buyers of cars in the current Aston range as a 65mpg-plus alternative to their fuel thirsty supercars—making it the world's most exclusive supermini.
It marks a nod towards environmental concerns just months after Aston Martin looked like they were heading in the opposite direction by reinventing the Lagonda brand with a luxury 4x4 and it seems to be an issue that the firm's chief executive, Dr Ulrich Bez, is taking seriously. He said: "Now is the right time for Aston Martin to take this first bold step to embark on this special project—made possible with the support of an organisation of Toyota's stature and capability and the intelligent design and perfect city car package of the iQ.
"The offering of a 'Cygnet' with a DBS, DB9 or Vantage is a unique combination of opposites and a novel transport solution allowing intelligent and sensitive mobility on an exclusive and innovative level."
