Alfie talks on hold

CONTRACT talks with Adam Le Fondre have ended but Rotherham United's leading scorer says he still wants to fire the club to promotion.

The highly-rated marksman is contracted to the end of next season and the Millers approached him about extending his deal for a couple more years.

Keen to play at a higher level, it is understood Le Fondre doesn't want the restrictions of a longer contract and talks have ended for the time being.

Chief operating officer Paul Douglas said: "We want to keep Adam and we initiated talks to see if it was possible.

"They were very amicable but the reality is that, while Adam enjoys his football here, he is an ambitious lad.

"He wants to keep his options open beyond the 18 months he has left with us and both our chairman Tony Stewart and manager Ronnie Moore respect that.

"We would like to sit down with him again in the summer."

Le Fondre has hit nearly 50 goals in less than two seasons since signing from Rochdale around 18 months ago and has been the subject of constant transfer speculation.

Speaking this week, Le Fondre told the Advertiser: "I've had transfer speculation since the first three months I've been here and it's never really stopped. It's never bothered me and it won't this week or next week.

"I won't be signing a new deal but I'm happy here and I'll just carry on playing my game and helping the team.

"Personally I feel I've done good work while I've been here and I'd like to see that come to fruition."
