Adam's delight but it's bad news for Luke

FAST-rising Rotherham pole vaulter Adam Hague came an superb sixth at the World Youth Championships in the Ukraine.

Adam was ranked tenth going into the competition in Donetsk and had a gruelling qualifying round where the top 24 vaulters from around the world had to be trimmed to 12.

He had a strong qualifier, clearing 4.50m, 4.70m, 4.80m plus the automatic qualifying height of 4.85m – all with first time clearances to claim a top 12 spot, finishing joint first.

The final was in temperatures of over 30 degrees, but Adam managed first time clearances at 4.60m, 4.75m and 4.90m which left him sixth but in front of the World leader from the USA.

But Adam’s clubmate and training partner at Dearne ALC, Luke Cutts, has frustratingly missed out on selection for next month’s World Championships in Moscow.

Cutts had earned the England, British and UK titles, achieving the B Standard selection height twice in one week while taking the scalp of last year's champion. But rival Steve Lewis, beaten by the Thurnscoe vaulter in the UK Championships, has been given the nod.
