'Ace' moment for Rotherham golfer Jonathan Thomson at The Open

The 25-year-old aced the par-three 16th hole at Royal St George’s on the way to a 67 which leaves him two-under-par.

“It’s just phenomenal. The roar, the shot, everything about that hole, it is indescribable really,” said Thomson who, at 6ft 9in, is said to be the tallest player to ever play in The Open.

“It was a real boost because I was grinding out there. I was playing well but I couldn’t seem to get anything going properly and then that happened.”

"Jigger's" ace came at the same hole where England's Tony Jacklin, the former British and U.S. Open champion, made the first hole-in-one shown on live television.

Thomson tees off today at 12.50pm with Lee Westwood. 

Wath’s Nick Poppleton, who came through the qualifiers with Thomson, shot a 73 to finish eight over.

Danny Willett shot a one-under-par 67 and is four under, tied for 17th spot. He starts his third round at 2.10pm.
