One of the questions people often ask when they start thinking about fostering is, “Would I be on my own?” The simple answer is no.

In this article Fostering Rotherham sets out what support there is for anyone fostering children in the area, how that support works, and what you can do to take the first steps to enquiring about fostering.

Be part of the fostering community

At Fostering Rotherham, we understand that fostering is both rewarding and challenging. It can bring moments of joy, pride and achievement, but it can also raise questions and require reassurance from time to time. That is why we believe strong, ongoing support is an essential part of every fostering journey.

When you foster with Rotherham Council, you become part of a wider community of foster carers and professionals committed to helping children and young people thrive. From your first enquiry, through assessment, training and approval, and throughout your time as a foster carer, there will always be people available to guide and support you.

Our dedicated fostering social workers are there to help with both the practical and emotional aspects of fostering. Whether you need advice, have a concern, or simply want to talk something through, there is always someone you can turn to. We know every fostering experience is different, and having access to professional support can make a real difference.

You will also have opportunities to connect with other foster carers who understand what fostering involves. Many carers tell us these relationships become an invaluable source of support. Sharing experiences, discussing challenges and celebrating successes with people who truly understand can help build confidence and resilience.

We offer a range of opportunities for foster carers to meet and learn from one another, including monthly coffee mornings, breakfast meetings, support groups and local events. These gatherings create a strong sense of community and remind carers they are part of something bigger. Sometimes simply knowing there is someone to call who understands can make a difficult day feel more manageable.

Fostering is not something you are expected to do alone. It is a shared commitment to helping children and young people feel safe, secure and supported while giving them the opportunity to reach their full potential.
