Are Rotherham United still interested in Jevani Brown amid the former Exeter City player's off-the-field troubles?

The 28-year-old faces a crown-court assault trial next month.

TROUBLED attacker Jevani Brown remains on the radar of Rotherham United manager Matt Taylor despite a high-profile court case involving two charges of assault on women.

The Millers boss revealed his interest in the player late last year, before the 28-year-old’s arrest in early February following a late-night incident in Exeter city centre.

Brown has admitted one charge and pleaded not guilty to the other and faces a crown-court trial on July 7.

He played for Taylor while the Millers boss, who moved to AESSEAL New York Stadium in October, was in charge at Exeter City.

“We’re keeping our options open,” the manager said. “We’ve seen from afar the situation unfold.”

Brown was suspended by Exeter when the allegations — which relate to the same flashpoint — first surfaced and didn’t feature for them for the rest of their League One campaign.

The Grecians released him when their season ended yet haven’t ruled out trying to re-sign him, depending on the outcome of his trial. They allowed him to continue to train with them while he wasn’t being considered for selection.

The forward, who spent several years in non-league football before joining Colchester United and then Exeter, is a talented performer. He had hit the target 14 times and provided nine assists in 32 games before the charges were brought against him.

Taylor believes the Hertfordshire-born Jamaican youth international is capable of playing in the Championship for the Millers but the court proceedings and potential moral implications present an obvious obstacle to a move to South Yorkshire.

“Jevani didn’t play after January,” Taylor said. “His stats up to then were astronomical. He was one of the most sought-after players in the division. What’s happening with the courts, I can’t comment on any of that.

“It’s a difficult situation for him and for Exeter. We’ll continue to monitor it. It’s fair to say we’re not ruling him in and we’re not ruling him out.”
