Rotherham District Civic Society use artificial intelligence to reach a wider audience
Rotherham District Civic Society has used an AI voice to narrate information about the figures of note honoured with a plaque.
The idea of using the technology came from David Wadkin (right), executive committee member and webmaster, after a trip to Malta.

David said: “It was when visiting the oldest structure in the world on the smaller island of Gozo, dating back to 3600 to 3200BC, that all visitors were provided the opportunity to listen to audio descriptions along each route, giving an advanced visitor experience.
“This led me to research what was possible and the development of an audio database of all the society’s blue plaques.
“Each file can be quickly edited and updated without the need to employ the expensive services of a voiceover actor, which we simply just cannot afford.

The society has unveiled 26 blue plaques since its scheme started in 2012, honouring an array of historical servants to the borough.
“The complete ‘heritage picture’ has yet to be completed,” said David, “but we are confident visitors will continue to appreciate the work of the society and with their support will consolidate Rotherham’s position in celebrating its rich heritage.
“We still welcome nominations for blue plaques from members of the public.”

And the group is also searching for new members to help continue its work protecting the heritage of Rotherham.
Buying each blue tribute costs £500 and David said: “Our fear is that the lack of funding may well result in having to suspend or even stop the unveiling of future plaques.
“We have launched a JustGiving crowdfunding page to enable us to plan more effectively our ongoing programme and provide more financial security.”
