Time to bring back dog licences

IT was distressing to read of the poor girl savaged by a Rottweiler, I wish her a full recovery.

This is sadly not an isolated or surprising event, as the country is being overrun by far too many dogs in general, and by large aggressive breeds in particular.

It’s really not very complicated; all dogs have sharp teeth and large dogs can inflict damage and death if they decide to bite. The unpredictable nature of all animals means that any dog may bite in certain circumstances. Too many dog owners are far too casual with regard to the control of their dogs. Countless people are intimidated by dogs running free off the lead in public parks and other areas. All dog owners can say is ‘he won’t bite’. Oh no? Tell that to the latest innocent victim.

Why should the majority of the public have to deal with the mess and loss of amenity caused by dog owners?

It’s time this issue is dealt with by more breeds being banned, jail terms for owners of dogs which have attacked humans, and a return to a system of dog licences at £250 a year.

Irresponsible dog ownership can and should be criminalised in the interests of the silent majority who do not own dogs.
