Squalor among the scenery

YESTERDAY I did the 25 mile Rotherham Roundwalk: a splendid route with some wonderful scenery and a lot of variety.

Unfortunately, one of the most abiding memories is of litter. Not just the odd drink can or fag packet, though Heaven knows there was no shortage of those.

Great drifts of refuse, burst bin bags, swathes of garbage. The area between Upper Haugh and Parkgate was the worst, but nowhere was litter-free.

Do you not have council refuse-collections in Rotherham, or is there something the matter with your residents, that they are prepared to create, and tolerate, such squalor?
