LETTER TO THE EDITOR: The trickle up

EVERYTHING was peaceful. I was skimming through a daily paper (the free one you get on buses) — trying to find some news — and thinking of using a couple of items in one of these letters.

My mood was good because I realised I’d missed the National Television Awards again.

A quick glance at the list of winners confirmed that I’d heard of very few. However, I was pleased to see that the Ant And Dec Award For Surely They Can’t Win Another Award had, deservedly, gone to Ant and Dec.

My good mood was enhanced by a story about bankers’ bonuses having risen twice as fast as general wages since the 2008 financial crash.

So, all that austerity and reduced public services was worth the sacrifice.

Then I became almost ecstatic because that nice Mr Kwarteng, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, was going to remove the cap on how much bonus the bankers could earn. That would increase their wealth, some of which would, then, “trickle-down”. Economic growth serving us all.

So, after an absorbing hour in Dinnington Library — trying to make sense of the bus changes, through the Travel South Yorkshire website — I sauntered off to the toilet to make my contribution to trickling down.

What a shock! On a big TV screen, the BBC was telling us that good old Kwasi had been sacked.

My first thought was not, of course, what a ******* shambles, but what about bankers’ bonuses? Surely, they’ve not got to stay capped at the measly average of £20,000 a year.

What’s going to happen to the trickle-down?
