LETTER TO THE EDITOR: No organisation at park bonfire

THE Clifton Park bonfire on Saturday was a shambles for the areas around this event.

There appeared to be no stewarding, security or parking personnel.

Cars were parked all along Doncaster Road, both sides, on the double yellow lines, restricting traffic flow.

The same in Cottenham Road, and other streets. This overflowed into private drives, blocking access for residents and emergency and medical/care workers. This was a total failure of the organisation of the event.

Residents had to confront people trespassing and parking on our private property. Police did visit the area, but achieved nothing

If this event, or similar, are planned in the future, the security, stewarding and parking must be organised adequately as all major events should be.

I assume there are minimum standards and guidelines, or example, overflow parking in Herringthorpe playing fields, Clifton Academy, free town centre parking, traffic wardens to issue fines, police to ensure no confrontation, stewards for safety.

This was a “free” event, but the cost to council tax payers was very significant; disruption, litter, confrontation, safety issues.
