Action on tax-dodging multi-nationals

FOR quite some time politicians have been paying lip service to the idea of closing loopholes which enable multinational companies to tax dodge by off shore banking and clever accounting.

People like myself, through ActionAid, have lobbied long and hard to get real action on this matter. Tax dodging by these companies costs the UK billions of pounds and robs developing countries of three times the amount they receive in aid. What kind of world are we living in?

It is now six months to the general election. This is a good time to put pressure on all parties. In a poll last year 84 per cent of the UK public were angry about this.

Since local councils hold some power over government ActionAid have launched an invitation to them to participate in towns against tax dodging. So far 17 councils have joined. To my current knowledge Rotherham Council are in meetings on their decision. Will the people of Rotherham support this action?
