Rotherham Borough Council’s building control department visited later on Sunday afternoon to ensure there was no danger to the public.

An eyewitness described seeing three men of Chinese appearance fleeing when they were approached.

The police were called at 11.45am, and remained at the scene until council officers arrived in the afternoon.

A UK Border Agency spokeswoman confirmed: “Officers visited a building site in Rotherham to make routine checks for illegal working by foreign nationals. No illegal workers were found at the site.”

A council spokeswoman added: “The building on Wellgate was made safe earlier this week by the owner.”
